file is already open error
========> RE: file is already open error
I do not remember your previous messages stating that if __ANY user on the network has one of the reports open at the __same time the report is supposed to run automatically (or __another user opens the same report) the report will get __locked in the system. ____Also- are you on a Novell network?______Kathleen__R&R Support

That is only one of the reasons that I get a file lock on a report run automatically through RapidRun.exe. The other reason is because I am unable (or maybe RapidRun is unable) to run an automated task / set of reports when either the report, data base, or export location is on a networked drive. This is the MAIN reason why I am getting file locks that I can^t get rid of on my NT 4.0. I am not running Novell, so maybe this isn^t the same problem ? ____

>The really quirky part is that the problem seems to happen >intermittently with no predictable pattern.____There is nothing intermittent about it. It happens very consistently with us. Just use Win2000 SRP2 and any Novell client. We have upgraded our Novell client many times but the problem remains. Also, why are we being given answers like, change the file name so PDF writing is unavailable. Shouldn^t you just fix the bug in the program? And what^s with, "Trying shutting it down and starting over"? That^s not much of a solution, and it doesn^t work anyway.____> ...and if the problem is really on our side or something in the __> Novell configuration. ____Oh, it^s on your side. Otherwise we would see at least one more example of the problem in another application, wouldn^t we?____> All questions without any answers....____Yep.____Michael Baggett

The problem in question here is the file is already open error do you want to make a copy on opening reports.____The PDF driver problem is a different issue. If R&R attempts to install the PDF driver but something such as insufficient user rights to install a printer prevents that from happening, when R&R closes it attempts to unload the driver, fails and crashes.____To avoid this error you can indeed rename or remove CDINTF.DLL or in more recent builds add the line PDFDriver=0 to the DEFAULTS section of the R?W.INI file.______Kathleen__R&R Support

There is lots of discussion about "file is already open error" happening when it should not happen. Where is the fix?

We^ve recently upgraded to Windows 2000, R&R 8.1 and Novell 5.1 and this is when I started to get file in use message - didn^t before when we had Windows 95, R&R 8.0 and Novell 4.11.____Most of the reports I run are directly through R&R (File -> Open) The first report I open whether through R&R or Start -> Documents, I don^t get the message. But if I go from this one to the next, I get the message - UNLESS I make a change on the report and save as I go from one to the other rather than saving then File -> Open to the next one (I^ll get the message in this case).__Also, I don^t know what this means but thought I^d mention this as well - if I get the message and click No, I don^t want to make a copy, then go to Start -> Documents the report is on the list so I open it from there and don^t get the message. __And I^ve never gotten the message if I open a report through Explorer.__I have several reports out on the network running with Runtime shortcuts and the users have never experienced this problem.

Thanks for the details.____Is there any one out there on a Novell network who is NOT seeing this problem? If so, maybe there is a configuration setting on the Novell side that might help.____The bad news from our side is that we do not have a Novell network available in house so that we can debug this issue.____Does anyone have a site in the Massachusetts area that we could potentially visit?____Kathleen__R&R Support

This is just a shot in the dark because we got off of Novell back in the Novell 3.12 days. It seems like the Novell client for Windows has had problems for years. I think that it forced many to WinNT/2K.____As I remember, Novell has/had a files setting that is equivilant to files= in the config.sys file, but it was a little different syntax.____Could it be that Novell still uses file handles and there is not a handle available and it see it as a locked file because it can^t open it?____I only offer this as an old outdated idea (much like the source) because it seems that we^re in the "reaching stage".____Pat__
