Download fonts

Post by Cliff_Wiernik » Thu Jul 05, 2007 4:33 pm

In the DOS version, we could download fonts to printers. In the windows version, the need for this was not needed until now. ____The newer HP printers do not provide all the same fonts (internal printer fonts) in their drivers that they had before. For instance, we were using the courier font but the new P2015 printer calls that Courier New. Thus, some drivers have it as built-in printer font and some as a True Type font. Our fax software can only extract embedded codes that are printed to built in printer fonts, not true-type fonts.____Is their someway to have a report file download a font like was available in the DOS printer definitions or does someone else have a better solution.____We can^t specify a different printer because something with the fax server printer driver uses the default printer driver even though the printer we specify uses a different driver. Prior to these we could use an older driver but the newer printers do not work with the older drivers. ____Automatic printer driver font substitution causes use problems as it switches to True-type Arial or in the case of Courier New built in driver to Courier New True-type font.____Thanks.____Cliff.

There is not a way to download fonts to the printer with the Windows version of R&R.____Are you seeing this problem only with your R&R reports?____Kathleen__R&R Support

>There is not a way to download fonts to the printer with the __>Windows version of R&R. __>__>Are you seeing this problem only with your R&R reports? __>__>Kathleen __>R&R Support ____We only use this R&R to generate reports. If we try to use an older print driver, like we did with the LJ 1320 printers, it worked fine using say a LJ4, LJ5x type driver. With the LJ2015 printers, using a different driver like this causes the printer to only printout the first print job. 2nd and thereafter reports do not come out of the printer. This was tested with R&R, our software which prints screens to the windows printer and I also think I tried Word/Excel. This problem is not R&R specific.____What is the problem is in the driver, which is really two issues.____1. Lack of consistent support for build in fonts in the HP drivers with which we previously use an older HP driver as a work around.__2. It appears that the RightFax (from Capteris) Fax Printer Driver is using the driver attached to the default printer, even though the Fax Printer Driver has a different printer driver. We have found that if we use the 2015 or also a 1320 driver for the default printer, but we use a HP4 driver for the Right Fax Printer (it has to be some type of HP driver), the driver, at least via R&R, it appears to use the default printer^s 2015/1320 driver, not the Right Fax drivers.____Thus, what happens is the courier printer font, which is a built-in printer driver on the HP4, is converted to Arial.____We have not but can easily test this with Word to determine if this improper driver usage is specific to R&R or also applies to Word. ____Just a note, this problem with the printer driver support is not limited to Reportworks. The CheckFactory product, from www.trans-micro.com has a similar problem. To quote their technote, "Many late model HP printers produced in 2006 and later no longer include PCL5 scaleable fonts that Check Factory utilizes for printing. Vers 2.45.75 or above must be downloaded and installed for used with these printers. The new version includes new fonts for the printer that are uploaded automatically."____As this company did, I have access to uploaded fonts, but need a methodology, like provided with the R&R Dos product to, to download fonts. That is why I asked.____After we have done some testing with word, I will let you know if it is a R&R problem with the incorrect driver being used or a problem with the RightFax Fax Printer Driver. RightFax is a company wide fax server product and the driver prints to the RightFax server^s print queue. We fax many hundreds of faxes each day this way. We have embedded codes (tags, like with the PDF eBurst) that are included in the print document. However Right Fax can only recognize the characters if they come from native printer fonts, not True Type fonts.
