IP Printing

We have several users using rrwrun.exe to print with no problems. Today I came across a different printer setup, using the newer IP Printing protocol. ____It is a Win XP machine, and I get a Windows error each time I try to print to that printer. ____Has anyone else come across this? I have either version 8 or 9 at that location. ____Is this fixed in version 10? Is there something I can change in the printer configuration?____Thanks in advance.

How are you selecting the printer in R&R? Do you allow the user to select from the windows printer dialog?__Kathleen__R&R Support

Yes, the user is selecting from a printer selection box.____If they select one of the other network printers, it prints fine, but attempting to print to the IP printer produces an error.____Also, the other printers show up in the selection box as the printer name that is shared on the network. The problem printer shows up with a listing such as //netserver/printer2 - not exactly like that, but with leading slashes.____

If this printer is the user^s default printer you could set RI_WPTR to Default and see if that works correctly.____Kathleen__R&R Support

That is an idea, but won^t work well for me - several users on the network call the same file to run this report, and they need the flexibility of choosing the printer each time.____I just didn^t know if anyone had actually come up against this. I^m sure you^ll start to see more printers hooked up this way, so it will be an issue in the future.____

Every thing is OK, if I set it to DEFAULT. I agree with you, that RI_WPTR must work correctly with ? . I hope that Kathleen will help us. __

Well, I^m sorry you^re having the same problem, but it is nice to know I^m not the only one. I wanted to make sure it wasn^t an isolated problem, just with my user.____I^m sure this problem will crop up more and more, as more users migrate to this new printing setup with XP. Hopefully a fix can be provided.____

I think I may be having a problem related to what you are talking about. Had Win ME installed and RR was working fine untill we upgraded to XP. After that I had to point the desktop shortcut back to the Server insted of local directory. Everything seems to work untill I try to print, then I get a rrwrun.out error. From what I have read this is a sharing or permission problem resulting from me pointing my desktop shortcut back to the server insted of using local user directory. I see a no win situation ??? Using version 9 Xbase or RR...______Troy

:* ____I believe the problem is macro substitution. Windows 2000 and XP put the net share in the printer name. It will be something like \NEThp2000. Depending how the printer name is read in, many programs will replace the \ with , as this is a normal macro sub., so when the printer is passed, it gets NET2000 instead. This produces an error.____I use a Foxpro Front-End and when I build an array of printers, I put "NET " in front of the network printer names that use \ so I end up with NET \NEThp2000. When I pass the printer name to WI_Printer, I pass the SUBSTR(printername,5,75) so I get the 2 slashes. Since doing this, I have no more problems on 98, ME, 2000 or XP machines.____Hope this helps.____
