Blank lines in text report

Hello, this is my first post to this site. We are using Report Writer, version 10.0 to create some reports from our PowerPlus system. ____We have a report that extracts data from the PowerPlus system and writes it to a text file. The report itself only has one line per client, a Summary line. However, for some reason the text file has numerous blank lines in between data rows.____This creates a problem for us, because we eventually open this file with Excel, and with the blank rows, the text file is over 65,536 lines long (the Excel maximum). So, all the lines after 65,536 will be "dropped" when opened in Excel.____I have tried to figure out how to get rid of these blank lines in Report Writer, but have been unsuccessful thus far. I have reduced all page margins to the bare minimum, and have checked the following options under Record Layout:__ - Compress Record/Group Lines__ - Suppress Record Lines__ - Headers/Footers in Summary__ - Print Non-Deleted Records__However, it has made no difference.____Can someone help me get rid of these extra blank lines in between data lines?____Thanks.

In Version 10.1 we added a new checkbox for text export that allows you to explicitly set no margins/page breaks. So you would need to update to get this functionality.______Kathleen__R&R Support

Kathleen,____Thanks for the response, but I am not sure that is really the whole problem (though I could be wrong).____It is not as if there are 40-50 rows of data and then some blank rows where you would expect headers/footers to be. There is one row of data, then a bunch of blank rows, then another row of data, then a whole bunch more blank rows, etc.____In actuality, there are really only about 1,200 lines of data in the export. But there are so many blank rows in the report being produced, that there are over 83,000 lines in the report. That means there are about 70 blank rows for every one line of actual data.____Does it still sound like it may be a header/footer issue?____BTW, the exact version we are using is Version 10+, Build 10.1.002

Not having seen the report, it sounds like some type of reset at the account or record level. This would put in one line, then the header/footer. Then go again. I run a lot of very long reports and this not happening to me. I would look in Group Order and see if you have reset page on a record level. Good Luck.

Actually, I did some testing, and Kathleen^s suggestion does work, with one caveat.____We do have that flag that she is talking about and if I select, it does produce just the one data row and not the other 66 blank rows.____The problem is that we are running the reports via a control file over 1200 times (for each of our clients). When I do this, it still shows the blank lines (it must be producing the reports with the default/unselected setting). I need to figure out how to set/select this flag via the control file.____Does anyone know how to do this (select this flag though a control file)? I will keep searching on my own and post back if I figure it out before anyone replies.

You are the second person to report that R&R is not honoring the saved settings when an export report is run via runtime. However in my testing, my exports from runtime DO honor the saved settings.__I have seen some strange behaviors in the designer related to reverting to the default settings rather than the saved when you open the report but I get correct results here which is puzzling for sure.____Kathleen__R&R Support

Kathleen,____It is very odd. It does appear to Save the setting, but it just doesn^t seem to apply when run via batch mode through a Control File.____If I do it manually, I go to Export, select Text, enter the file name and the "No Margins/Page Break" field is checked. If I run this on the one plan, it works perfectly.____However, when I run it against all plans via batch file and control file, it resorts back to the old method of including all those blank lines.____If I then go back into the Report and check the "No Margins/Page Break" flag, it is still checked. This leads me to believe that when run via control file, either this flag is being ignored or temporarily overwritten. ____Is there anything in the Control File that might do this? I have my "RI_Printer" setting set to "A". Are there any printer settings which would affect this flag?____Thanks.

I am using a control file as well and I have the settings honored...__So I will keep testing to try to find the factor that makes it break.____Kathleen__R&R Support

Just checking back to see if any progress has been made on this yet. ____This is a very important issue for us that we must figure out a way to work around.
