how to ID no data on single band export

The conditional printing of a header band line when no data is found works very well when the report is sent to the screen or printed. Does anybody know of a way to trap the no data found when exporting to a single band file? No data doesn^t raise an error (I wish it would), nor can you intentionally raise an error by doing a calculated divide by zero. Thanks for any ideas and help!__
