Question about .RRW versus .RP5 files

Does every report have to be seperate now? If I have a singe report file, .RP5, with some 50 reports in it, Do I know have to have 50 files with an extension of .RRW?

I have the same problem. I don^t think you can create or maintain a library of reports with V8.x. You can use an existing library to run reports with the runtime or development version. In my case I have R&R DOS V6.0 .RP1 libraries. For the time being, I maintain these libraries with the old DOS version and run them with the RRWRUN V8.1 (Runtime). This seems to work for the most part except I^ve found that blank lines are automatically compressed out of some reports. V9.0 may provide some way to deal with this library issue. Maybe K. You cannot create new .RP5 library files with version 8.1, however, you can update and maintain existing .RP5 libraries. Adding new reports simply requires that you save back into the existing .RP5 library.

Saving reports to a .RP5 file with V8 is fine and that is what I do. In fact, I copy my .RP5 file then delete the line items and create a new report then save it. After that I select copy report and copy the new report over to the .RP5 file that I want it to go to and give it a new name.____The big problem is that V9 does not allow you to save a report in a .RP5 file at all. So you can not create the report using all the features of V9, then put it into a .RP5 file.

At some point along the way someone decided libraries were bad and they^ve been squeezing them away from us. In 8.x you could write to existing libraries but not new ones. In 9,x you can^t write to a library at all. Will 10.x not read them?____I^m not sure what it is about libraries that caused them to fall into disfavor.

I initially like the library concept. ____However whenever one makes a change to a report, the entire library has to be copied over. ____This can be a serious problem if two different persons are working on different reports. One person could have their changes erased when the .RP5 is copied into the directory.____In addition sending via email the entire .RP5, when only one report was changed, is time consuming. ______

Libraries are fragile file structures that can degrade over time.__They also cannot accomodate the newer features that were added in more recent 32bit releases.____So in Version 9 we have finally gone to only writing to RRW compound files.____Kathleen__R&R Support
