Garbage in long character fields
We are using R&R v9 with and Oracle8i (version 8.1.7.3.0). We are connecting using ODBC using Oracles driver (version 8.00.06). The report is a SQL report, and some of the columns are defined as varchar2 data types 1000 characters in length. If we try to display the column in the report, we get garbage characters. I have tried breaking the column into 250 character fields using the substr function in my select statement. When I run it in SQL Plus, it is fine. The portion of the column from 1 to 250 characters is ok, but all 250-character portions beyond 250 characters (i.e 251 to 500, 501 to 250, etc) continue to display as garbage. ____I run itno the same problem if I use the Microsoft ODBC driver (version 2.573.4403).____I also have no luck if I break up the column in the R&R report defintion (using calculated fields),____Any idea what the source of the problem might be?

The source of the problem is indeed the interaction of R&R and the driver. If you can use the Oracle7 driver, it will work correctly.____Kathleen__R&R Support

==> Garbage in long character fields
Thanks, for the resonse!____We have looked all over, and we don^t have an old R&R CD with the Visigenic Oracle 7 ODBC driver. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy? (dreilly@ocwd.com)____We hesitate to try to get an old ODBC driver from Oracle because it is such a hassle with managing the versions for the Oracle Installer.____Thanks for your help...____Doris

We are having the same problem as Doris. We did not start using Oracle until version 8. Therefore, we do not have an Oracle 7 cd. Could you please email me the Oracle 7 odbc driver? My email address is:__agalewski@automatedlogic.com__Thank you.__Ali

Ali,____I sent the following text to R&R support. I think this is a bug. Please complain to Liveware so they know there is more than frustrated user!____Doris____Kathleen,__ __(Regarding topic # 818)__ __We are unable to use the Oracle 7 driver because we have upgraded to Oracle 8 and Net8. The Oracle 7 driver requires an older version of SQLNet.__ __We installed the latest Oracle driver (8.1.7), and the problem is still happening.__ __We tried accessing using Crystal Reports with the same driver we are using with R&R. There is no problem with garbage characters in the fields. __ __My conclusion is that it is a bug with R&R. Can you confirm, and what are the plans to fix this. This is a major problem for us, and would like to get it addressed ASAP.__ __Thanks,__ __Doris__

Here is the contents of the email that I had sent just before checking forum messages this evening:____From: K. Fleming [mailto:kfleming@livewarepub.com]__Sent: Monday, August 05, 2002 5:10 PM__To: Reilly, Doris__Subject: RE: Oracle driver______It is indeed a bug in R&R^s interaction with the driver rather than the driver itself.__Unfortunately I cannot promise a fix in the near future. I realize this is bad news but I want to tell you the real story rather than making any promises that cannot be delivered upon.__Believe me that I even more than you would like to see this one fixed.______Kathleen__R&R Support
