Orphans & Widows

Post by Pam » Sat Aug 24, 2002 2:00 am

How do I control groups / bands so that all header, record, and footer lines for a group will print on the same page? If there isn_t room on the current page to print all these lines for this group (engine), then don_t print any line on this page and skip to the next page. I want to keep each cam bearing driver set, with its instructions, as a set by engine. I don_t want them broken up with part of the set on one page and the rest on the next page. The following link is to a two-page graphic file (44K) scanned from a report I produced, as an example. As you can see, at the bottom of page 11 the IHC 345 (V345) cam bearing driver set is broken up and continues on the top of page 12. In other cases, the instructions/notes for a set are broken up and split between pages too (I didn_t send an example of this).____Graphic file (44K)__http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bc0imj9A9ogo3qIT&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=rpt_pg_11n12.tif&.src=bc____The following links are for copies of the report and data files stored at Yahoo.com.____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9AlZOto4eU&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=Cam+driver+sets+by+vehicle+2002_08_06.RRW&.src=bc____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9A2WDZqE8_&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=CAM_DR_SET.CDX&.src=bc____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9Ay_lXhHEH&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=CAM_DR_SET.DBF&.src=bc____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9A5ePb.Hcf&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=VEH_ID.CDX&.src=bc____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9A8iFRHGBz&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=VEH_ID.DBF&.src=bc____http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pam_garry/vwp2?.tok=bczeXj9ADrtAIpQl&.dir=/My+Documents&.dnm=VEH_ID.FPT&.src=bc____(Note: The http address should be all on one line and is good until Sept 22, 2002.)__

The problem is that R&R does not have a control that allows you to tell it to keep a group of records together on a page. The only built in widow/orphaning prevents a group header or footer from being split across pages or printed without at least one of its corresponding records on a page.____One painful thing that I have done in the past is to first preview the report, find out where the bad breaks occur, and then add explicit logical new page lines based on the specific record where I need the group break. If the report is small enough and you really need the breaking to work in a certain way, then maybe you can use this approach.____Kathleen__R&R Support
