Long printer names

Post by johncawley » Fri Sep 06, 2002 11:06 am

Hi,____I have a problem with Windows 2000 and R&R runtime that I wonder if anyone has a solution for:____Windows 2000 supports printer names up to 220 characters but the RI_WPTR parameter has a maximum width of 40.____As a result of the limitation my application only prints to those printers that have printer names with less than 40 characters.____This wouldn^t be such a problem if the app was only deployed in one location but it^s going to be distributed nationwide and using shorter printer names isn^t an option (or so the third party vendors says).____Has anyone got any ideas (or should I start looking for another job)?____Thanks,____John Cawley__Schlumberger

Try just increasing the size of RI_WPTR. I just tried a 80 character printer name on my XP machine and it worked. Anything greater failed (which I will indeed log as a bug)__Kathleen__R&R Support

Kathleen,____Thanks for your speedy reply. ____We tried increasing RI_WPTR on Windows 2000 and this appears to work up to 81 chars - anything greater fails as you suggest.____We also tried removing the function that uses RI_WPTR and constrain the user to printing to the default printer.____However, when the Printer Name is 80 chars or more R&R crashes.____I note that you have logged this as a bug. Is there any likelihood of getting a fix (and if so when)?____Thanks again for your assistance.____John Cawley__Schlumberger
