Changing Data Source

Post by RoyP » Wed Jan 07, 2004 10:54 am

When I develope an R+R V10 SQL report and initially point to my test data source all is ok. ____To make the report go live I need to point to the ^Live Data source^ and need the report to save the ^NEW^ chosen source. ____I cannot make this work i.e. I cannot get the data source to change and save with the report.____I have tried various selections in the ^Options^ area i.e. save data source with the report but I cannot get it to work.____I am sure I must be doing something silly....Help please____Roy__

The trick is that you need to make the change when you open the report.__To change the data source, first open the report file using the File Open menu selection.__In this dialog there will be a third selection box below the report name that will say Data Source. Here is where you select the New data source that you want to use with the report.__Then open and save the report. It will now be saved with the new rather than the old data source.______

Followed the above and loads of variations on the same but....every time I go into the report following saving I have to point to the data area/mdb i.e. R+R does not save the changed data source with the report.____I have tried all options in the Options area i.e. use data source saved with report etc. but it will not save it.____I could get around the problem if there was a command line instruction to choose the data source but I can^t find that either and don^t think it needs to exist anyway if I could save which data source to use along with the report (which seems logically simple)____Any other ideas, very welcome ____PS____I created the report initially with the standard ^Access^ ODBC driver not the data source I now need to use. I am about to try creating another data source and test report to see if I can get that to work. i.e. is it something to do with my initual choice to use the Access ODBC?____thanks for your help so far.____

Hi kfleming/Any one that can help,____NOPE!____My quick test does not work either.____To show problem (which is leading strongly towards an R+R bug) I do the following:____1. Create Instant report and point to ^AAA^ data source...no probs____2. save above (1) report____3. Set options to use saved data source____4. Change data source (via file menu)and save report____5. Leave R+R____6. Re-open new report and the new data source is not even listed. and is not the used source.________ ____

When you set up an Access data source, if you want that data source to point to a specific MDB file, you need use the SELECT button in the Database section of the setup screen and choose the MDB when you configure the data source.____You can then have DatasourceA that points to A.MDB and datasourceB that points to B.MDB.____The only caution is that R&R can sometimes behave strangely if there is more than one MDB in a given directory. It is best for R&R purposes to have each MDB in a separate directory location.____Kathleen__R&R Support

Thanks Kathleen,____I am already using the ^SELECT^ as you suggest so there is nothing I can see I am doing wrong here.____I have 3 MDB files in a single folder and will move them to separate folders today, if this will stop R+R from "acting ^Stangly^".....____I am not convinced it will solve my problem because R+R is not asking me to choose one of the 3 MDB^s but requires me to point to the Drive, Folders and then choose the mdb.____I let you know the outcome.____Thanks again

Hi Kathleen,____R+R is still ^Acting Strangely^, ____I have had one of our programmers create a separate folder to hold a single MDB file i.e. the one I need to use. Re set up my Data Source to point to this file etc. and sure enough R+R will not save the ^Connected Data Source^ with the report so that each and every time I need to point to the data when loading the report.____Could you please try the test above and let me know if you can change Data source and then save the new one with the report. I think I have found an R+R Bug and it causing me loads of trouble, stopping me from creating the command/text files and icons etc.____Please help !!!!____PS I have also tried ^User DSN^ to see if that would work ....NOPE!____PPS also instaled R+R on my local machine and updated that ....Nope!____I lookmforward to your reply.__
