Chart problems

I have created a bar chart to show how many items I have in each particular category. This works well and the category name prints at the foot of each bar. However, when I change the type to a pie chart, the words disappear. In the R&R cookbook there is an example of a pie chart with words. Is there any way to insert dollar signs and commas in numbers in charts? I can only get a plain vanilla chart.____Thanks.
