Intellegent Page Break

Post by RoyP » Wed Jan 29, 2003 7:57 am

Has any one worked out a way of logically inserting a page break so that I can insert a page break at appropriate positions in order that my Reports do not look messy at the page break point..... This is not just a simple query like how do I insert page breaks after say a group footer etc. please read on.____I use boxes for subtotals etc. but because I do not know how many lines are going to print per item due to variable data; often page breaks iserted by R+R due to being at the bottom of the page will cause the next page to start with the bottom of a box line that should surround the previous total on the previous page.____It seems to me that I need R+R to inform me of a of line count which could allow me to control my paragraphs. In this way I could create calculated fields and use ^logical^ line control to insert page breaks when the report is at a chosen line count/position down the page.____This query is difficult to explain so imagine you were printing invoices with various quantities of line items, depending upon the number of line items a second page could easily just have the bottom line of the ^Total^ box on it and nothing else.____I hope this lot makes some sense and look forward to your help.

R&R does not have a line count function.__It^s built in widow orphan control is limited to not wanting to a print a group band unless at least one record of the group can be printed and to not split a group band across a page.____One thing that I have done in the past is to preview the report and then add logical new page lines based on exactly where I want the breaks to occur. For a single important report this is worth the effort.____Using boxes sometimes can be tricky depending on the band lines that they start and end in.____Kathleen__R&R Support

Is your subtotal box always the same size?____If it is, you may be able to create your own line count variable, adding the appropriate amount to it for detail lines and at summary breaks. This is an "old school" way of keeping track of lines.____I^m not sure of all of the mechanics of doing this, but it seems reasonable.____Hope this is of some help.
