RR V9 - File/Open on WinXP Pro

Post by mgeorge » Mon Jul 21, 2003 12:31 pm

__We just received two new WinXP Pro PCs running SP1 and installed R&R Version 9. We are experiencing very slow access times to R&R network files (R&R files only), or we are receiving messages indicating the file is in use and asking if we want a copy to be made (the file is not in use by anyone else).____We only get this behavior when we use File/Open from the R&R menu. If we access the R&R report files using Windows Explorer, the performance and file-in-use issues go away.____Again, we are only seeing this problem with R&R files.____Has anyone seen problem before. Any thoughts/insight on how to resolve would be appreciated.____(Note: I have downloaded and installed the Verion 9.0 patch availablel in the Downloads area. Unfortunately, that did not help with this situation).____Thank You.____Michael George

I too have this problem - but I think it stems from XP not R&R.____When I open a report via the library (which resides on our network) it can take up to a minute before I can do anything. If I re-boot the XP machine & then try again, it comes up straight away. If I then do other work for an hour or so & then try to open an R&R report, l^m back to the slow opening. You can also just disconnect the NIC & then reconnect it & things will be OK again - its just a PITA.____I have a similar problem with Visual FoxPro 7.0 & 8.0 since I moved to XP PRO. If I do work on a large file & then try to open another file I can wait up to a minute before I can type anything again in the command window. If I do the exact same tests on our other machines which are running WIN98 (& arent as powerful/fast as my new machine) the ^wait^ time is up to 75% less!!! - and the R&R problem doesn^t happen either!! These problems don^t occur if you work on local (C:) files - its just when you try to do things with network files.____3 cheers for XP!!!______

Thanks for you input.____In our case, this behaviour is limited to R&R files only and to the 2 new XP Pro machines we have. We have 7 other XP users in our office and they are not experiencing any of these problems.____

So it is only the machines with SP1 that show the problem?____Kathleen__R&R Support

The other XP users in the office are also XP/SP1.____I did search the MS site and found some KB articles (810907) that were similar in description to what we are experiencing, but not exact. They offered a free hot fix through MS Support, which I did receive (it has not been fully tested by MS and they have all kinds of caveats about installing it).____Due to the fact that this problem is limited to R&R report templates (.RRW) only, I have held off on installing it and wanted to pursue a solution through R&R/Liveware. I was hopeful when I found other users in this forum with the same problems. However, there does not seem to be a known solution as of yet (via MS or Liveware). It seems that each user with this problem has developed a workaround of some sort.____Any other comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.____Thank You.____Michael George.
