V 8.1 to Reportworks 11 transition

Post by Nick » Mon Oct 24, 2005 1:27 pm

I have a couple of questions about Version 11 of R&R which I just purchased.____I have seen answers to some previously, I think, but if you dont mind...____1. Can Version 11 peacefully coexist on my development machine with Version 8.1 and will I be able to use both to save reports in their respective versions? ____Any pointers here?____2. If I use Version 11 to change and 8.x report and do not use any new features that are not supported by the 8.x runtime, is it safe to do so. Simple things would be done that are supported in both versions.____3. If I want to deploy Version 11 runtime to support a Visual Foxpro 8 free table data source, what should I put in the ini file to avoid the speed degradation that occurs in releases after 8.x. I think I saw something about PDF printer settings.____I have already dropped the runtime into a test environment and there dont seem to be any issues or compatibility other than speed. And I did not need to install any additional drivers.____Thanks__Nick

=> V 8.1 to Reportworks 11 transition

You can have 8.1 and 11 on the same machine. However be aware that there are some files that are installed to the windowssystem directory (such as RRW32.OCX and RRRPT32.DLL) that will be Version 11 once you do the ReportWorks install. Also the R?W.INI that is in c:windows will point to ReportWorks.__So what you can do is before installing V11, copy all of the V8.1 files from the windows common folders to the 8.1 directory. Then do the V11 install.____Reports saved in V11 can indeed be run without a problem in 8.1 even if they contain newer features like parameterr fields (which in 8.1 will just be treated as calculated field constants).__If you open newer ones in the 8.1 designer, you will get a warning dialog, but the report will still open.____When I am designing reports for clients, I always use ReportWorks (since it is faster/better) and then do a final open/save in whatever earlier version the client uses (just so they do not see the warning dialog and become alarmed).____In V11 add the line PDFDRIVER=0 to the DEFAULTS section of R?W.INI to avoid the overhead of loading and unloading the PDF driver.__ __Kathleen__R&R Support

I have saved some reports with a password with version 11 password utility and they do not run with runtime in earlier versions of R&R, i.e. version 10, haven^t tried in earlier then v10. Is this the only exception.____DanF

If you add a password, then you do need to use V11 since that is indeed the only version that supports passwords. Passwords are not backward compatible.____Sorry that I neglected to think of this in my original response.____Kathleen__R&R Support
